Create an account on the NYT Developer Portal, then follow Get Started: open My Apps, click + New App, enable the API products you want on the app's APIs tab, save, and copy the app's API key from the API Keys section. The portal shows both a value and secret; the public API examples and OpenAPI specs use the api-key query parameter.
